Service Definitions

Understanding the difference between Apostille, MEA, and Embassy Attestation.

The most common reason documents are rejected abroad is choosing the wrong attestation route. These definitions explain each service clearly so the first step is always the right one.

What is an Apostille?

An Apostille is a certificate issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs under the 1961 Hague Convention. It certifies an Indian document for official use in 120+ Hague member countries β€” no embassy stage required. The process starts with notarization, then state authentication, then the MEA Apostille stamp.

What is MEA Attestation?

MEA Attestation is the official legalization of an Indian document by the Ministry of External Affairs. Unlike Apostille, MEA attestation is used for non-Hague countries and is followed by embassy attestation at the destination country's embassy in India.

What is Embassy Attestation?

Embassy Attestation is the final legalization step for documents destined for non-Hague countries such as Qatar, Malaysia, China Mainland, and Nepal. The destination country's embassy in India attests the document after state authentication and MEA attestation.

What is HRD Attestation?

HRD Attestation is the state-level verification of educational documents by the state's Human Resource Department. It is mandatory for degree certificates, diplomas, and transcripts before MEA or embassy processing can begin.

All services start with notarization.

Regardless of whether your document needs Apostille, MEA attestation, or embassy legalization β€” notarization by a notary public is almost always the mandatory first step. DIDC confirms the correct notarization format before any other stage begins.

Not sure which service you need?

One conversation with DIDC is all it takes to confirm the correct route.

Document requirements depend on the destination country, document type, issuing state, and receiving institution. DIDC confirms the correct process β€” including notarization format, state authority, and whether embassy attestation is needed β€” before a single document is moved.

What is Apostille Services?

An Apostille is a standardized certificate issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs under the 1961 Hague Convention. It certifies that an Indian document is authentic and ready for official use in any of the 120+ Hague Convention member countries. India has been a Hague member since 2005.

When do you need it?

You need an Apostille when your destination country is a Hague Convention member β€” such as the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Australia, Canada, France, Japan, or Singapore. An Apostille replaces the embassy attestation stage for these countries.
